THE West Nile regional prevention officer at Aids Information Centre, Alfred Okuonzi, reveals that sexually active people have resorted to moving with their HIV test cards to lure their partners into unprotected sex hence increasing the infection rates in the region.
The 2011 HIV/Aids survey report indicates that the prevalence rate in the West Nile region currently stands at 4.9 percent.
The National HIV/Aids average of the prevalence rate is at 7.3 percent.
Okuonzi was speaking at a stake holder’s consultative meeting in preparation for the candle light Memorial Day observance 2015.
He has appealed to service providers to intensify the awareness campaign to the public by informing them that the cards expire as one indulges in risky sexual behaviors.
The vice chairman Arua district Network forum for people living with HIV/Aids (ADNEFA) Ronnie Rokoni has criticized the district health officials for neglecting HIV related activities causing the soaring number of new infections.
Arua district HIV focal person Dr.Pontious Apangu has cautioned people using their HIV test cards to negotiate for unprotected sex, saying it is not in line with the policies of the ministry.
He adds that the law is clear about those who deliberately spread HIV in the community and therefore any person caught in the act shall be held responsible
